When I view a study (echocardiogram) I have animation set to loop but the viewer plays one loop and moves on the the next item thereby playing the whole study sequentially. How do I play one image/loop and advance when I want to

Yes, you can.
Go to Tools/Options, Animation section. You have to select source to "Current image".

Can the loop last indefinitely with this option if not set otherwise, Simeon?

Yes, it will loop indefinitely, if you check "Loop".
